Canton trail committee meets Thursday before two-month break

Canton's Walk, Bike and Hike Committee holds its last meeting before a two-month break on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom, with fall trail maintenance, a farmers' market appearance and the stalled Wentworth path project on the agenda.

The 13-item agenda, posted to the town's Agenda Center on Tuesday, Aug. 18, confirms there will be no September meeting. The committee's next session after Thursday is Oct. 15, followed by Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.

Fall planning takes center stage

Thursday's agenda focuses on October events. The committee will plan for a Trail Maintenance Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, and a tabling event at the Canton Farmers' Market on Sunday, Oct. 11. Members will also discuss action items tied to Canton's Open Space and Recreation Plan and consider publishing an article in the September Canton Citizen to highlight accomplishments and recruit new volunteers.

The committee is actively seeking new members and will discuss whether any progress has been made filling open spots.

Wentworth project on hold

The Mary E. Wentworth shared-use path appears twice on the agenda: once under "next steps" and again on a list of items deferred to future meetings. The agenda notes the project is awaiting a new Town Manager before it can advance.

As we reported July 21, the committee's July 23 session also covered the Wentworth path alongside Washington Street sharrows and the Open Space plan. A sharrows update is again listed as an active agenda item Thursday, though the sharrows on Washington Street and the broader Washington Street Corridor plan also appear on the deferred list with no timeline attached.

Other deferred items include the Eliot Hollow Passive Recreation Area trail extension, the Charles Drive Extension/Warner Trail connection, Trail Adopter signage and kiosks, and the Skyline Trail crosswalk.

The committee also partnered with the Neponset River Watershed Association for a spring cleanup on April 25 that drew nearly 400 volunteers across 15 sites, including a Canton Park and Ride location.
