Canton residents can weigh in Thursday on the town’s future trails, bike routes, and open spaces as the Walk, Bike and Hike Committee reviews several projects during its monthly meeting.
The volunteer advisory group meets virtually at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23. The meeting will be held on Zoom while the Canton Public Library remains closed for renovations. Residents can join using Meeting ID 441 394 0217 (password: 04012020) or call 646-558-8656.
Among the biggest items on the agenda is the proposed Mary E. Wentworth shared-use path, a planned 1.2-mile accessible trail along the waterfront. The committee will discuss next steps for moving the project toward bidding, possible private funding, and an upcoming feature about the project in the September issue of the Canton Citizen. The project received a $48,000 MassTrails grant in 2024 for a feasibility study but remains on hold pending further town action.
The committee will also discuss new bike safety markings on Washington Street. Shared-lane markings, known as sharrows, are expected to be installed within the next month, weather permitting, according to information included in the meeting agenda.
Another major topic will be Canton's updated Open Space and Recreation Plan, a 10-year roadmap for parks, trails, conservation areas, and recreational facilities covering 2027–2037. The plan was developed with consultant Horsley Witten Group and funded through the Community Preservation Act.
Other agenda items include updates on the Galvin Middle School project, a recent pedestrian safety walk audit in Randolph, efforts to control invasive knotweed, and discussions with town officials.
The committee is also looking for new members. The group, which helped organize the spring 2026 Neponset River Cleanup that brought together nearly 400 volunteers, will host an outreach table at the Canton Farmers’ Market on Sunday, Oct. 11.
Residents can attend Thursday’s meeting to share feedback or follow future discussions at the committee’s monthly meetings, scheduled for Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, and Dec. 17.
