Milton's girls volleyball team hosts 8-2 Westborough at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in a cross-conference matchup at Milton High School.
The Wildcats (6-5) carry back-to-back wins into the contest. They swept Stoughton 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 9, winning every set by at least 12 points. The scores: 25-4, 25-13, 25-12.
That lopsided sweep capped a stretch in which Milton has won five of its last six home games. Five of the Wildcats' losses this season have come against teams ranked in the top 10 of the MIAA Division I power rankings, according to MassLive.
Westborough, a Midland-Wachusett A program, brings an 8-2 record but arrives stung by a 3-0 loss to Wachusett Regional on Oct. 9. That defeat snapped the Rangers' three-game winning streak and marked the first time all season they failed to win a set, according to MaxPreps.
The Rangers kept the first set tight at 26-24 before Wachusett pulled away, 25-21 and 25-19. Al Regnier led Westborough with 23 kills, 14 digs and two aces. Charlotte Dullea added 30 assists and four digs, and Sylvia Benyas matched Regnier with two aces.
Before that stumble, Westborough had beaten Hopkinton 3-1 on Thursday, Oct. 8, in a non-league match. Wachusett Regional, which handed the Rangers their loss, entered that game at 10-3 and riding a nine-game home winning streak dating to last season.
Milton head coach Al Mirabile has leaned on his team's competitive schedule as a measuring stick. After a 3-0 loss at Natick on Oct. 6, he told MassLive, "For us, it shows that we can compete with these teams, but we obviously have to execute a little better, and defend a little bit better to beat teams of this caliber."
Mirabile also pointed to his players' mental toughness after that Natick defeat, telling MassLive his team has a history of rallying from two-set deficits to win best-of-five matches.
The Wildcats answered. They won their next two matches to climb back above .500, setting up Tuesday's test against a Westborough squad that will look to bounce back from its own rough outing.
First serve is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Milton High School.
