Milton resident Kevin Martin is featured in a new documentary about his climb up Mount Kilimanjaro with fellow cancer patients and survivors.

Martin, 60, was diagnosed with terminal Stage 4B prostate cancer in 2024. The short film, Slowly, Slowly, was selected for the CinHealth Film Festival and screened Sept. 15 in Philadelphia during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Created by filmmakers Chris Cresci and Jason Greene, the documentary follows prostate cancer patients, survivors and supporters as they climb the nearly 20,000-foot mountain through ZERO Prostate Cancer's first Peaks Challenge, which took place in September 2025.

The film's title comes from "Pole Pole," a Swahili phrase meaning "slowly, slowly," a refrain Kilimanjaro climbers hear as a reminder to move deliberately, according to a ZERO Prostate Cancer press release.

Martin, an endurance athlete, learned in 2024 that his cancer had metastasized to roughly 40 places in his bones after what doctors initially thought required only active surveillance. Doctors gave him two to four years.

The eight-day Kilimanjaro expedition raised more than $500,000 for ZERO Prostate Cancer's programs. Martin told the Milton Times in a Sept. 24 profile that the summit night was one of the hardest of his life.

"I didn't think I was going to make it," Martin said in that interview. "We had taken a break, and I had a backpack on, and one of my fellow hikers pulled me by the straps, and said, 'Kevin, you've come this far. We're not stopping here.'"

The Milton Times reported he called the bonds formed during the climb "lifelong."

As we reported Sept. 24, Martin has also been pursuing an Abbott World Marathon Majors medal, having run the Boston, London, Chicago and New York marathons since his diagnosis. As of the Sept. 24 Milton Times profile, he planned to run the Berlin Marathon with his two children and the Tokyo Marathon in March.

His wife, Lisa Martin, published Our Healing Home: 360 Changes We Made When Cancer Arrived At Our Doorstep, with 100% of proceeds going to cancer research.

Martin also does competitive ballroom dancing, takes singing lessons and was working on starting a garage band as of September. He has tattoos of Mount Kilimanjaro on his chest and his father's last written words, "all is well," on his arm.
