Milton residents can apply for paid positions helping the town prepare for extreme weather as part of a $260,000 state-funded climate resilience program.

The town posted a recruitment notice on Wednesday, Sept. 23, seeking Community Liaisons for the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness 2.0 update, a regional effort shared with Norwood and Dedham. The liaisons will help assess climate risks and shape local action plans, as Milton Scene first reported.

The positions are compensated through grant funding, according to the state's MVP program description.

No specific pay rate has been published.

The Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded the $260,000 grant to the three-town group on April 2 as part of more than $3 million in MVP 2.0 grants statewide. About 349 of Massachusetts' municipalities, nearly all of them, have enrolled in the broader MVP program.

"Our communities know their unique climate challenges," Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said in the April 2 grant announcement. "MVP 2.0 empowers them to shape solutions that work for them … especially their most vulnerable."

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council and the Mystic River Watershed Association are assisting the three towns with the process. The program runs over two years in two phases: a planning and community engagement phase, followed by a "seed project," a nine- to 10-month initiative targeting a specific resilience priority identified by residents.

To qualify, applicants must live, work or study in Milton. They must be comfortable in written and spoken English and able to lead engagement activities such as hosting listening sessions or conducting survey outreach for the full length of the project.

Milton's Select Board created a Climate Action Planning Committee in January 2023 to review town bylaws and recommend strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A town-commissioned inventory found Milton's total emissions rose 3.6% between 2017 and 2022, reaching 292,120 metric tons of CO2 equivalent.

No application deadline has been published. The town's notice was posted Sept. 23, and the MAPC application form for the Norwood-Dedham-Milton MVP 2.0 program remained accessible as of Sept. 28.
