Lisa R. Lopez won the Democratic primary for Canton's 6th Norfolk District state representative seat on Tuesday, Sept. 1, collecting 3,164 votes across the town's seven precincts.
The Canton Town Clerk posted official results on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Lopez captured about 67% of ballots cast in the race. Michael C. Loughran trailed with 1,305 votes, and Stephen Matthew Cavey received 236.
As we reported Wednesday, no Republican candidates appeared on the ballot for the seat. The incumbent did not seek re-election. With no GOP challenger, Lopez is positioned to win the general election.
Norfolk County DA race
The seven-candidate Democratic primary for Norfolk County District Attorney produced a tighter contest in Canton. Adam W. Deitch led with 1,698 votes, roughly 37% of ballots cast in the race. Djuna Elizabeth Perkins finished second with 1,033 votes, and Gregory P. Connor placed third with 832.
The remaining candidates trailed further behind. Macy Lee received 399 votes, Robert Louis Jubinville got 313, Jim Barakat collected 209, and Craig J. MacLellan finished with 78.
Those tallies reflect Canton's contribution only. The DA race covers all of Norfolk County, and district-wide results from other towns were not included in the clerk's posting. The incumbent district attorney did not seek re-election.
No Republican candidates appeared on the DA ballot either. Canton Community Television reported before the primary that one Independent Party candidate is expected to appear on the November ballot for the office.
Other races on the ballot
Canton Democrats also weighed in on federal contests. Edward J. Markey received 2,647 votes in the U.S. Senate primary, ahead of Seth Moulton with 1,953. In the congressional race, Stephen F. Lynch collected 2,791 votes over Patrick Thomas Rdaith with 1,722.
On the Republican side, John Deaton led the U.S. Senate primary in Canton with 900 votes out of 1,104 total Republican ballots cast.
Canton cast 6,059 total ballots across both parties, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans nearly five to one.
