Lisa Lopez won the Democratic primary for Canton's 6th Norfolk District state representative seat on Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to Canton Community TV, defeating Stephen Mathew Cavey and Michael Loughran in a three-candidate race.

No Republican filed for the seat. That makes Lopez all but certain to represent Canton, Avon and parts of Stoughton in the Massachusetts House of Representatives after the Nov. 3 general election.

Canton Community TV posted the announcement on Wednesday, Sept. 2. New York Times election results listed the race as a contest between Lopez and Cavey, though official vote totals for the 6th Norfolk District have not been released.

The seat opened after the incumbent chose not to seek re-election this cycle.

Lopez, a 42-year Canton resident and former Select Board member, has deep roots in town government. According to Progressive Mass, which endorsed her ahead of the primary, Lopez championed Canton's municipal energy aggregation program, known as Canton Electrical Choice, and helped establish the town's Affordable Housing Trust while on the Select Board. She currently chairs both the Canton Housing Authority and the Affordable Housing Trust.

She also served as the first chair of Canton's Community Preservation Committee. She played a role in the town's COVID-19 response.

Lopez ran on a platform centered on housing affordability, environmental protection and health care access. The 6th Norfolk District covers Avon, Canton and portions of Stoughton, including Precincts 1, 2A, 4A, 5, 7 and 8.

The primary drew strong early voting across Massachusetts. The Secretary of State's office reported 550,632 early ballots cast statewide, with 460,228 from registered Democrats and 90,404 from registered Republicans, according to Boston 25 News. Canton voters cast ballots at Town Hall, 801 Washington St., where polls were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Lopez will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot unopposed by a Republican candidate.
