The Canton Select Board opened two public hearings Tuesday, Aug. 11, on proposals to cut speed limits to 20 mph on five residential streets. Official outcomes are pending the posting of meeting minutes.

The board, chaired by Susan M. Harrington, convened at 7 p.m. in the Salah Meeting Room at Memorial Hall. Clerk John R. McCourt was listed on the meeting agenda as leading both hearings, which began at 7:15 p.m.

The first hearing addressed a proposed amendment to Canton's Traffic Rules and Regulations that would designate Wentworth Road, Ridgehill Road, Tilden Road and Talbot Road as a Safety Zone with a 20 mph speed limit. The second covered the same designation for Revolution Way.

As we reported Aug. 7, the hearings were among several action items on the board's agenda, which also included a vote on a tax-title property at 140 Washington St. and a proposal to consolidate two sustainability committees.

Under Massachusetts law, Safety Zones allow municipalities to set 20 mph limits near parks, playgrounds, senior housing, hospitals or childcare centers without approval from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, according to MassDOT. Roads with the designation should also include treatments such as signage or pavement markings that cue drivers to slow down.

The board's next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall. If the Safety Zone amendments are approved, the Canton Police Department would enforce the new 20 mph limits on the designated streets.
