Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton opened its expanded Emergency Department the week of Aug. 25, nearly doubling the number of beds at the community hospital on Reedsdale Road.

The project caps a fundraising campaign that exceeded its $8 million goal, ultimately raising more than $13 million from donors. The Copeland Family Foundation anchored the effort with two gifts totaling $2 million. Those gifts will be recognized through the naming of the new emergency department.

BID Milton's ED was originally built to handle 26,000 patients a year. It now sees about 42,000 annually. The expansion adds private treatment rooms, observation spaces, modernized clinical technology and more than 80 new parking spaces.

"The facility will allow us to care for more patients, strengthen clinical workflows, and provide an environment that better reflects the high-quality care delivered by our teams," Rich Fernandez, president of BID Milton, said in a statement reported by the Milton Times.

Jonathan Anderson, chief of the emergency department, said the upgraded space supports Beth Israel Lahey Health's goal of delivering 70 percent of care in community settings rather than large academic centers.

The hospital broke ground on the expansion in March 2025. By Feb. 4, workers had installed 20 prefabricated modules forming an 8,100-square-foot single-level addition, a milestone BID Milton celebrated with a ceremony that included local officials and supporters.

The Copeland Family Foundation's $2 million commitment was announced at BID Milton's Everyday Exceptional Gala on April 11 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. The event drew more than 400 supporters and raised over $700,000 that evening alone. The Everyday Exceptional campaign was the hospital's first capital campaign in over a decade, and it also funded a complete renovation of inpatient spaces.

Dan Nadworny, director of emergency and critical care at BID Milton, said at the February construction ceremony that the project would "provide increased beds for our growing community and increased demand."

The expanded emergency department is now open to patients.
