Chapman Street is open again after Thursday's gas line rupture near its intersection with Spring Lane in Canton, but drivers on Spring Street should expect continued traffic restrictions while Eversource crews finish repairs.

Canton Fire Chief Jamie Meier confirmed there is no ongoing danger to residents. Evacuated homeowners along Spring Street were cleared to return Thursday after utility crews shut off gas to the area and contained the leak.

"We're all relieved that we were able to quickly contain this leak, clear the area and avoid a more serious incident," Meier told NBC Boston on Aug. 6.

Meier credited prompt reporting by residents for enabling an immediate response, saying cooperation between firefighters and Eversource crews averted all injuries.

The 2-inch gas line break was reported shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, near the intersection of Spring Lane and Chapman Street. The Canton Fire Department's preliminary investigation identified the rupture, and Eversource Energy crews responded alongside firefighters.

Homes along Spring Street were evacuated during the active emergency. Motorists were directed to avoid the area and use Washington Street as a detour, according to Patch. Meier described the situation Thursday morning as "an active emergency" and urged residents to stay away from the intersection until crews could ensure the area was safe.

No injuries were reported.

By Thursday afternoon, the Canton Fire Department had contained the leak and lifted the evacuation order. Patch initially reported the emergency at approximately 10:41 a.m. and updated its coverage by 5:42 p.m. with the all-clear.

As of Friday, Aug. 7, Chapman Street had reopened to traffic, but Spring Street remained restricted while Eversource completed gas line repairs. The utility company has not announced a timeline for finishing the work or fully reopening Spring Street.

The Canton Fire Department and Eversource have not issued press releases with additional details beyond what Meier provided to media outlets Thursday.
