Canton's Community Preservation Committee will begin reviewing applications for its next round of grant funding when it meets Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Pequitside Tavern, 79 Pleasant St.

The meeting marks the committee's first session since June 1 and opens the fiscal year 2028 funding cycle. Among the six agenda items is an "FY28 Pre-Application Review and Liaison Assignments" discussion, signaling that groups seeking CPA dollars for historic preservation, open space, recreation or community housing projects should have their proposals ready.

The committee will also take up a leadership reorganization item, approve minutes from its June 1 session and discuss extensions for existing projects, according to the posted agenda.

A public comment period opens the meeting.

What CPA money has funded

Canton voters at the May 2026 Annual Town Meeting approved all eight new projects the committee and the Finance Committee recommended, along with the eighth of 10 payments on the Paul Revere Heritage Site and administrative funding for fiscal year 2027, according to the committee's page on the town website.

Recent high-profile grants include $200,000 the committee approved in December 2024, ratified by voters at the May 2025 Town Meeting, for restoring the Canton Public Library's historic 1902 rooms. In 2024, the committee authorized $452,500 for the Library Park project on the library's 2.4-acre grounds, approved at the May 2024 Town Meeting.

Canton generated $168,725 in CPA recording fees in calendar year 2025, according to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. Under state law, at least 10 percent of CPA funds must go to each of three categories: open space and recreation, historic preservation, and affordable housing.

Fall meeting schedule

After Aug. 24, the committee's next meeting is Oct. 19 at the Pequitside Tavern. Additional sessions are scheduled for Nov. 2, Nov. 16, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7; locations for those meetings have not been announced. All meetings begin at 7 p.m.
