The Canton Board of Library Trustees will meet at the Canton Public Library for the first time since the building closed for an approximately $2.8 million interior renovation, gathering Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Trustees Room at 786 Washington St.

The library shut its doors June 29 for Chapter Three of "The Next Chapter" repair and restoration project. It partially reopened Monday, Aug. 10, but with a catch: patrons now enter through the Junior Room entrance and can access only the ground floor and second floor. The main floor remains closed to the public while Seaver Company, the general contractor, and design firm TSKP Studio overhaul the space.

The agenda, posted on the town's website, includes a committee update on the interior renovation, a financial report, a status report on the Park and Front electronic sign and a discussion of a political activity policy. Trustees will also approve minutes from their June 16 and July 21 sessions.

The renovation scope covers an upgraded lobby, repair of three original 1902 rooms damaged by water leaks, a new Young Adult area with study rooms in the current reference room, a new computer area and additional meeting rooms. Funding came from three Town Meeting votes: $2,168,000 in free cash approved in May 2026, $200,000 in Community Preservation Act funds approved in May 2025 for the historic rooms and $450,000 in turnback funds from the completed roof and HVAC project.

"The staff and I are so excited to begin this phase of renovation for our library," assistant library director Rosie Moore said in a June 26 press release announcing the closure. "This work will bring much-needed upgrades and a greatly improved library experience for all of our patrons."

The building draws nearly 200,000 visits per year. Its last major renovation was more than 20 years ago.

Library director Andrea Capone and trustees chair Joan Schottenfeld lead the board overseeing the project, which is expected to wrap up by early fall 2027. Until then, the library is open Monday 1–9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

The Aug. 18 meeting is open to the public.
