Canton's School Building Committee will take up a budget vote and construction update for the $241.7 million Galvin Middle School rebuild when it meets Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. Superintendent Derek Folan represents the district on the committee.

The posted agenda, dated July 22, includes a vote on "Pre-GMP #3," a pre-guaranteed maximum price package that locks in a cost ceiling for a portion of the work before the full guaranteed price is set. Members will also review and vote on project alternates, approve invoices and approve minutes from the June 17 meeting.

A construction update is on the agenda. The most recent publicly available progress report, from January 2026, showed the project at 8% completion and still in the construction documents phase. The main bid package was targeted for release in June 2026, but no updated progress report is publicly available.

The project serves Canton's 766 middle school students in grades 6-8. Consigli Construction is building the new school under a construction-manager-at-risk contract, with Ai3 Architects as designer and Leftfield LLC as project manager.

Canton voters approved the rebuild at a Special Town Meeting on Nov. 18, 2024, and in a debt exclusion ballot vote on Dec. 10, 2024. The Massachusetts School Building Authority committed up to $72.8 million toward the total cost. The existing Galvin Middle School at 55 Pecunit St. was built in 1971.

The project targets substantial completion by July 7, 2028, with students entering the new building Aug. 28, 2028.

Where to attend remains unclear. The town of Canton's official calendar lists the meeting as "Remote," while the Galvin project website lists the venue as Canton High School's DLL room at 900 Washington St.

A public comment period is included on the agenda. The next committee meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 5 p.m.
