About 1,600 Milton families received federal food assistance as of late 2025, according to the town's food resource guide, which the town issued in response to a federal government shutdown that was expected to halt SNAP funding beginning Nov. 1, 2025 unless Congress reached a deal. Separately, nationwide SNAP enrollment has been falling since Congress cut $187 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025.
The town's guide lists several local programs that can help.
Milton Community Food Pantry
The Milton Community Food Pantry opens twice a month and provides shelf-stable food, frozen proteins, fresh produce once a month and household items once a month. The pantry also offers grocery store gift cards seasonally. Current open dates are available at miltonfoodpantryma.org.
Pat Brawley served as the pantry's executive director as of spring 2025. The pantry was not accepting food or household item donations as of November 2025 but welcomed financial contributions at miltonfoodpantryma.org/donate.
Emergency food bags
The Milton Health Department provides emergency non-perishable food bags to any resident, no questions asked. Each bag contains canned goods, pasta, rice, peanut butter and other shelf-stable items.
Bags are available at the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Ave., and at the Health Department. Residents can contact Anne Grossman, community health social worker, at 617-898-4887 or [email protected].
The Health Department also accepts donations of shelf-stable items at its office in Town Hall.
Take One, Leave One shelves
The town set up community shelves at three locations where anyone can take what they need or leave what they can:
- Milton Council on Aging, 10 Walnut St. (front door)
- Milton Town Hall, 525 Canton Ave. (first-floor hallway)
- Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Ave. (Canton Ave. foyer)
Lisa Courtney of the Health Department showed Milton Access TV the Town Hall shelf in March, and the town's resource guide continues to list all three locations.
Free school meals and student impact
Milton Public Schools provides free breakfast and lunch to all students every school day. Food Service Director Natalia Perez noted in the town's November 2025 resource guide, issued during the federal government shutdown, that 615 Milton students receive SNAP benefits and could be directly affected by cuts.
"We can support these families by ensuring that our school community is aware that a nutritious breakfast and lunch is available free to all students every school day," Perez said at the time.
Families seeking additional help can call Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline, which offers counselors in 180 languages to connect callers with the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program and local food pantries. Details are at projectbread.org/foodsource-hotline.
Milton Residents Fund
The Milton Residents Fund provides financial assistance for housing stability, including help preventing utility shutoffs, eviction and purchasing winter heating oil. National context
Nationally, more than 3.5 million SNAP recipients lost benefits between July 2025 and February 2026 after the One Big Beautiful Bill Act took effect, CNBC reported. Massachusetts saw close to one-fifth of children enrolled in SNAP removed from the program, according to a Guardian analysis of data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Emergency food bags are available at the Milton Public Library and the Health Department. Take One, Leave One shelves are at Town Hall, the library and the Council on Aging. The food pantry's current schedule is at miltonfoodpantryma.org.
