Milton High girls soccer put five goals past Brockton and allowed none in a non-conference game Saturday, Oct. 31.
The 5-0 shutout, posted by Milton HS Athletics on X, gave the Wildcats a convincing result heading into the final days of the regular season. Milton stood at 7-6-2 overall and 4-4-2 in Bay State Conference Carey Division play on MaxPreps as of Oct. 31.
The win comes at a pivotal moment. The MIAA regular season for soccer ends Tuesday, Nov. 3, with Division 2 brackets scheduled for release Thursday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m., according to the Boston Globe's postseason guide. Playoffs begin Nov. 6.
Milton sat at No. 7 in the Division 2 power rankings as of Oct. 27, MassLive reported. The top 32 teams in each division qualify automatically by MIAA power rating, according to The Mass Pitch. Teams ranked 33rd and below can earn a play-in with a .500 record or better.
The MIAA rating factors average margin of victory, capped at plus or minus three goals per game, plus the average of opponents' ratings, according to The Mass Pitch. The maximum three-goal credit from the shutout adds to Milton's rating heading into the Nov. 3 cutoff.
Head coach Kevin Gorham has built the program around a demanding schedule. In an October interview with the Milton Times, Gorham said the Wildcats deliberately seek out top competition beyond Bay State Conference play.
"We want to compete with the best," Gorham said. "… We feel that that's the best route to prepare us for the season, and the best route to prepare us for success in the playoffs."
That approach showed in the Wildcats' recent stretch. Milton beat Weymouth 4-0 on Oct. 27 and drew Walpole 1-1 on Oct. 29 before Saturday's rout, according to MaxPreps. Earlier in October, the Wildcats lost to Natick, Hingham and Needham.
Milton's schedule on MaxPreps lists a game at Framingham on Monday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. The Division 2 bracket release follows three days later on Nov. 5.
