The Canton Public Library closed Monday, June 29, for a renovation that will reshape its main floor and restore three rooms dating to 1902. The project is the most significant work at the 124-year-old building in more than two decades, and the library's website estimates it will last until approximately early fall 2027.
The closure is part of Chapter Three of "The Next Chapter," a multi-phase effort led by the Board of Library Trustees. Seaver Company is the general contractor. TSKP Studio, selected by the Building Renovation Committee in September 2024, designed the main-floor layout.
During the closure, the main floor is off-limits. When the library partially reopens, patrons will enter through the Junior Room entrance, according to the library's project page.
Books and other standard materials can be returned to the parking-lot book drop (availability may vary during construction setup) or at any library in the Old Colony Library Network. Items that don't fit the drop slot, such as board games and hotspots, should be held until the library reopens. Digital services Hoopla and Libby remain fully available. No private study space is available during the renovation; three new study rooms are planned for 2027.

The plan calls for upgrading the lobby, repairing the three original historical rooms built in 1902, transforming the current reference room into a young adult area with study rooms, and adding a new computer area and meeting rooms. The Canton Community Preservation Committee authorized $200,000 to repair damaged walls and dentil molding in the original rooms, where water leaks over many years caused deterioration. There are no plans to expand the building's footprint.
Chapter One, a $4.3 million roof and HVAC replacement approved at Town Meeting in 2023, came in significantly under budget, freeing roughly $450,000 in turnback funds for the interior work.
Chapter Two created Library Park on the building's front lawn facing Washington Street. The Canton Community Preservation Committee funded the park with $452,500 approved at the May 2024 Town Meeting. More than 300 residents and businesses purchased personalized bricks for its walkways. Joan Schottenfeld, chair of the Board of Library Trustees, said at the November 2025 Library Park groundbreaking that the park was "an exciting milestone for us, and we would love to share that excitement with the public."
For Chapter Three, Town Meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, approved $2,168,000 from free cash plus $200,000 in Community Preservation Act funds. Final funding cleared at Town Meeting on Monday, May 11, 2026. The Next Chapter Capital Campaign has raised over $100,000 through grants and donations, with design plans funded in part by a bequest from Vickie Chaisson.
The library drew nearly 200,000 visits in fiscal year 2024, according to town data.
