Canton residents looking to escape dangerous heat on Wednesday, July 15, have two town-run options: a cooling center at the Senior Center and extended hours at the Bolivar Pool.
The Town of Canton activated the cooling center at the Department of Elder and Human Services/Canton Senior Center, 500 Pleasant St., in response to an extreme heat advisory affecting the region, according to a town alert posted Monday, July 13. Both facilities also offered extended hours Tuesday.
The Senior Center cooling center is open Wednesday, July 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The space is air-conditioned and available to all residents.
The Canton Pool at the Bolivar Aquatic Center, 199 Bolivar St., is open Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., according to the town alert and Canton Parks and Recreation.
Standard daily admission is $5 per person. Late-day entry after 5 p.m. drops to $2.
Residents who need a ride to the cooling center or require other help during the heat advisory can call 781-828-1323 during regular business hours, the town said. In an emergency, call 911.
The town's alert urged residents to check on neighbors, particularly older adults, young children, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat. Extreme heat worsens common age-related health conditions including heart, lung, and kidney disease, according to CDC data.
The advisory comes as a heat dome that broke records in the western U.S. earlier this week pushes into New England. More than 128 million Americans were under a heat warning, watch, or advisory as of Tuesday, July 14, with NOAA forecasters expecting highs of 95 to 105 degrees across the Northeast through midweek, according to Axios reporting.
The town's heat safety guidance: stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
