Canton residents 65 and older can get a high-dose flu shot at the Canton Senior Center on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Canton Board of Health is hosting the clinic from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center, 500 Pleasant St. The town's event listing says the clinic is open exclusively to Canton residents aged 65 and older.

The high-dose vaccine contains four times the antigen of a standard flu shot and is FDA-approved only for people 65 and older, according to GoodRx. The CDC preferentially recommends the stronger formulation for that age group, which accounts for up to 85% of seasonal flu-related deaths, according to the National Council on Aging. September and October are the best months to get vaccinated. It takes about two weeks after a shot for the body to build antibodies.
