House historian Marian Pierre-Louis will teach Milton residents how to dig into their home's past at the Milton Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m.

The workshop, "10 Steps to Researching the History of Your House," covers how to find deeds, chain deeds and locate sources such as U.S. Federal Census records, maps and tax records, according to The Milton Scene. The talk applies to homes of any age. Pierre-Louis, who specializes in southern New England genealogy and historic cemetery research, has spent more than 25 years researching hundreds of houses across Massachusetts and New England, according to her Northeast House Historian website. She tailors each presentation to the community she visits, researching an actual local house so attendees learn about the specific records and quirks they will encounter in their own town's archives.

"Rather than give a generic presentation, I research an actual house in each town I'm speaking to," Pierre-Louis wrote in a July 24 post on her website. "It's more work … but it means the audience is learning about the exact record types, quirks, and gaps they'll actually run into in their own town's archives."

Pierre-Louis described the workshop as appropriate for beginners and experienced researchers alike. As of July, she had given roughly 21 house-history talks in six months and has published more than 400 articles on the subject.

In the same July post, Pierre-Louis explained what draws her to house history: old homes, she wrote, are "physical, tangible proof that someone stood in this exact spot a hundred or two hundred years ago."
