Canton High senior Soley Rodriguez Martinez became the first Bulldog volleyball player to record 1,000 career digs. She also committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball at Bryant University.

Rodriguez Martinez, a libero, was named HockomockSports.com Player of the Week for Sept. 14–20 after a dominant stretch that included the program milestone. She is the second Hockomock athlete to earn the honor this school year. The award is presented by Morse Insurance.

The 1,000-dig mark came during Canton's 3-0 win over Taunton on Monday, Sept. 14. Rodriguez Martinez posted 16 digs and two kills in that match.

She kept producing after the milestone. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, she tallied 11 digs and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of Mansfield. On Friday, Sept. 18, she put up 29 digs and four aces in a five-set loss at Attleboro, the defending Kelley-Rex division champions.

Her week totals: 56 digs and nine aces across three matches.

Rodriguez Martinez had plenty of help. Brooke Connor tallied 11 kills against Mansfield and 18 against Attleboro. Katie Podgurski added three kills and four aces in the Mansfield win and nine kills at Attleboro. Aida Sfeir chipped in eight digs in the Attleboro match, according to the Canton Volleyball account on X.

Canton went 2-1 on the week to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Head coach Pat Cawley praised his senior in the HockomockSports.com announcement. "She is the heart of our team, the calm in our storm, and the glue keeping us together!" Cawley said.

At Bryant, located in Smithfield, Rhode Island, Rodriguez Martinez will join an America East Conference program that competes at the Division I level. The Canton volleyball program has claimed 18 Hockomock League titles and the 2019 Division 2 state championship, according to the team's account on X.

Canton sits at 3-2 in Hockomock League play heading into the second month of the season.
